Cake

Like many parents, this was the most awaited birthday moment for me (at the risk of rousing the doodle police)...

You may notice that Gwyneth is self-feeding, which is a pretty big deal and something that she has just started the past few weeks and is still trying to figure out (obviously...). Instead of giving her a piece of cake, we actually made a little cupcake with a "G" and a candle (along with a big cake for the rest of us to enjoy), which is what you see her eating. More pics and video from party central to come!

BTW, I'll give 200 CFHusband points (worth absolutely nothing) to the first person who can correctly tell me why the song in the video above fits so well...

  1. hmmm well I have NO idea what the song even is.... so, I have NO idea why it's perfect. I do know, however, that that's one darling daughter you've got there :)

  2. So Dear To my Heart is the name of the song, I think, and it's perfect for the video, as Gwyneth is so dear to your heart!

  3. I love it!!!! I think its safe to say she has a sweet tooth. Thanks for sharing, and well done on the self feeding thats a hard skill to master

  4. Well my guess was going to be that the song was from The Baby Elephant Cakewalk, but I see that Beverly already made a guess, which is probably more correct than mine! HA!

I love the video, though. Congrats to Gwyneth on the self-feeding. What a big accomplishment!

  9. So dear to my heart.........It's the perfect song. After all that Gwyneth has been through you were able to bring her home from the hospital. To celebrate this day with her is a miracle. And that my friend makes her so dear to your hearts.~Darlene

  29. Aw, so cute! At the twins' first birthday, Lily didn't even know what to do with her cake (we did cupcakes for them too). My husband actually put some icing on her face so she'd match Leah for the pictures! Now, she's the best eater of all three girls! Seriously, she even eats pepperoncinis and brussel sprouts! Anything I make, she says, "Oh, fank you mommy! I love that!" Little Gwyneth has come so far already, and it's only a matter of time!

  30. The Baby eating the Birthday Cake is always our favorite part of First Birthday celebrations in our family, too!! We have another one to look forward to in just over a month, :)
What an absolutely adorable video of your Miracle Baby Rose!!

  31. The song was very Napoleon Dynamite-ish...but I have no idea what that would have to do with anything. Oh, wait - does it have anything to do with building her a cake or something?? LOL

Either way, the girl was loving her some cake! (Which is pretty awesome)

  32. She did a great job feeding herself that cupcake! Way to go Gwyneth :) She is so precious and I am so glad she had a great !st birthday celebration! Can't wait to see more pictures :)

  34. Love. It.
Looks like she had a blast! But where are the cheese doodles?!?!
My son (who turned 1 on jan. 7th) had chocolate cake for the 1st time yesterday also. He's had cake, but never chocolate. Your sweet girl looks like she enjoyed hers a bit more.

  39. well i instantly knew it was Napolean Dynamite.. and Pedro wants to ask Paige (i think) to the dance and he says, "i'll build her a cake or something" and I think that is the song that is playing during the scene.

but i noticed that a lot of people before me guessed it was Napolean Dynamite and something to do w/ the cake..

  40. Just a hearty Amen, it has been a long yet wonderful year for your family. Many hardships that you posted that we all got to share in, yet, it seems just like yesterday I stumbled on your blog and begain praying for the baby to be and the mommy to be.

  41. Awwwww. Every little one deserves to have some cake on their 1st birthday!

    Sweet pictures!

My son wasn't a preemie and not near as small as your sweet Gwyneth, but small for his age none the less (just under 18 pounds at 1). His doctor basically told me he can have as much stuff of the stuff we have to limit as he wants. He will be 3 on Thursday and he MIGHT weigh 25 pounds now.

  45. She is such a miracle (I know you know that already), but when I need a pick me up in my job (I am a NICU nurse), your blog is one that I come to.

I'm glad the doodle police don't come to my blog and tell me why I shouldn't feed my kids chocolate cake for breakfast =). . .

  46. OH My Goodness!! How cute was that?! She was completely into that cake...too cute. Thanks so much for sharing!

  47. So precious are these moments when our children are small. You captured the 1st Birthday Cake Eating very well. Yep, that's what one year olds do with cake!

Loved the doodle reference although we call them Wotsits in the UK so took me a while to get it!!!

  49. It sure did look like she was enjoying it! I am glad that she is self-feeding. Just wait until she gets to experience all the yummy things in life, although I can't imagine anything topping cake! Yum!

  50. Summers cake by John Swihart is the name of the song.~Darlene

  52. So cute! You're braver than I--we just celebrated my son's first birthday yesterday and I insisted on white cake because I was afraid of the mess. But--then they decorated it with red frosting, which negated any benefit of the white cake. :-)

Has she had any of the preemie texture issues with feeding?

    ReplyDelete
  53. Didn't know it was Napolean Dynamite (still hadn't seen that movie) but did you not dress up as Napolean Dynamite for Trunk or Treat - have vague recollections after winning the previous 'Trunk or Treat' name the relatives in the poster contest!! Lol.

  54. i think i would probably join the so-called "doodle police," (i'm a registered dietitian and have focused on child obesity) but even i let my sweeties have cake on their 1st birthday...i wasn't too sad they didn't want to eat it, though. :)

    ReplyDelete
  55. Adorable! And I just about peed myself laughing about "the doodle police!"

    ReplyDelete
  56. The song is from Napolean Dynamite, a favorite here at our house and we also own the CD. This song is played in the movie when Pedro is taking a cake over to Summer (to ask her to the dance). Right?

  58. There is nothing like the first birthday cake mess. The messy the better in my book, and good ol' chocolate YUMMMM!

    ReplyDelete
  59. OK, I KNOW I WILL PROBABLY GET INTO TROUBLE FOR THIS BUT... I WOULD HAVE GIVEN HER THE CAKE AND DOODLES AND A CUP OF DR PEPPER. I KNOW NONE OF IT IS GOOD FOR ANYONE BUT WHEN YOU ARE CELEBRATING WHO CARES. BESIDES I AM JUST A MOM TO 4 CHILDREN AND HAVE NO EXPERIENCE RAISING A PREEMIE.

    ReplyDelete
  60. DYNO-MITE!!! She got it. Sister has learned to feed herself. Thats what happens when you give them things they really like to eat. They will go leaps and bounds to try and eat it all by theirself, Doodles and all :)
Best Wishes in the coming 2nd year!!

  61. You know that cheese doodles are the gateway drug. The gateway to things like crunchy cheetos and doritos and what not. Really...it's a life long battle.

I only at orange foods for an entire year as a child. And I turned out just fine. :) Fortunately carrots and (real) cheese are orange too.

  62. Well, this is the first time I've posted, but the "doodle police" comment made me chuckle so much that I decided to stop lurking. Happy (Late) Birthday, Gwyneth, and here's to many more in which you get to feed yourself cake! :D

  66. To heck with the Doodle Police! I got chocolate cake on my first birthday. It's a rite of passage! I'm glad to see that Gwyneth enjoyed hers as much as I enjoyed mine, and that she has awesome parents to document the occasion. Baby Gwyn, may your life be long and happy!

  67. I believe the song is:

WITH A SONG IN MY HEART

  68. I think the tongue out towards the end is my favorite. No first birthday is complete without pics of the baby covered in cake!
I'm glad she is able to feed herself some - that's a great milestone! You have to be sure to share pictures of you and Tricia covered in the food that she shares with you/throws on you as she masters this skil... :)

    ReplyDelete
  69. Priceless!!!! She is toooo cute! Happy Birthday! blessings, jen in al

  70. Well, the only thing I can think of, is that the pictures match up with the beat of the song. You were able to put the pictures to a beat :) And the song fit perfectly for it??? Eh, probably wrong, but just a guess.

  71. Too cute! She is a doll and looked like she was really enjoying that cupcake! I've followed your blog for so long and it's great to see how well you all three are doing! You've truly been blessed and your story has touched my life in ways you could never imagine. Thank you for sharing with us all!

  72. The cake was delicious although I wish I could have stayed longer and consumed more ice cream. Life is now juggled between twin feeding times.

The party was great and it was fun to watch baby Rose eat her cupcake.

Utz jalepeno chips were an excellent compliment to the sandwiches. I made mine with rye bread and the bread and butter stackers.
