Sick Baby

Gwyneth has her first cold (which is amazing at 10 months old). Lot's of nose snot and eye boogies and a little bit of drainage and coughing. Fortunately, she was already scheduled for an appointment with her ped today...the doc said it's only in her head and not in her chest, so we'll just keep her nose clear and wait it out and let her build up some antibodies.

Also, Gwyneth was weighed today...11lbs 12oz!!! She has literally gained about one pound per month since January, which is great.

We're heading to Durham this afternoon. Tricia has two appointments at Duke tomorrow, one with her TX team and one with the cancer docs. We're assuming we'll be told what the next step is for her lymphoma treatment, but at this point (having waited over a month for this info), nothing would surprise us. With Gwyneth in tow, you may not hear from me again about the latest news until Wednesday night or even Thursday morning.

Thanks!

Nate

  1. Praying for Tricia's appointments to go well. On another note, I absolutely love your couch! Where did you find it? The stripes are so bright and cheerful and I'd like to have that in my house! Prayers from South Dakota.

  8. Wow, considering all Gwyneth's health issues at birth, that is amazing that she has not been sick before. She must be covered in prayers!

  9. ..the doc said it's only in her head ...
I giggled a bit at that, envisioning you telling Gwyneth to "snap out of it" it's just her imagination making her nose run.

10mths is a long time to go without a cold, good job! They're so pitiful when they're sick, it's great cuddling time!

  16. Hi! Thanks for the update. I hope Gwyneth is feeling better soon. 10 months is pretty amazing though to be illness free. We already knew she was amazing so we should not be surprised :-) I hope Tricia's appointments are full of positive hopeful news with another path to recovery in mind. Praying that this is what they spent their whole month thinking, planning and praying for guidance for. Have a safe trip.

  19. There's something about a big, tough guy like yourself using the word "boogies" that makes me giggle...which, in turn, makes me feel like I'm about 12 years old.

Praying Lil G gets to feeling better and Tricia's appointments go well!

Hope you got to see the little bit of snow in the triangle today. After last year's "winter" it was pretty amazing that it snowed in the fall.

  25. I had to laugh that you said "it's all in her head"!!! That's great that it's her first cold, but I hope that Tricia and you don't get sick from her.

I'll be praying for your trip and your doctor appts.

  27. Good luck, and prayers. Hope Gwynneth feels better soon - colds are horrid, as you feel so foul, but it's "only" a cold. Extra fluids will help her get over it faster.

And looking forward to hearing what they want to do to help Tricia, too.

  28. Poor baby! that is so miserable, and they just don't understand why they feel that way! Is Mommy wearing a mask? You don't have to answer that!!!!

  30. I'm sorry Gwyneth has a cold, but I'm glad it's JUST a cold. :)

I weighed only 18 pounds at a year old, and I was born at term. True, I was a shrimp, but...

    She's doing great, it seems.

  36. I have been following your story for a long time now. I just want you to know that I will be praying for Tricia as she travels back to Duke. Being an oncology nurse, I can imagine what she's been going through. I also hope Gwyneth bounces back quickly. Many prayers for your family.

  38. Praying for all of you!! And as others have already said.....good job on keeping Gwyneth cold free for 10 whole months! Our 3 and a half year old with CF had her first cold at 3 weeks old...and we were(are) super careful ALL the time!

  39. Your story is incredible. Tricia sounds like a fantastic mom and you are a special dad.
Gwyneth is a lucky little girl.
Happy Days ahead for all of you.
    I will say a prayer.

  40. Hi KayKay...although I deleted your comment, I thought I'd respond...

    1) You're assuming we are going to clinic.

    2) You're assuming that, if we are going to clinic, you know what our specific clinic appointments consist of.

    3) You're assuming that we don't fully understand and appreciate what "immunocompromised" means, that it would be impossible (or at least difficult) to safely take a baby with a cold into a situation like you've described, and that we wouldn't take the necessary precautions to keep everyone safe.

    4) You're assuming that we don't know how to best care for our preemie baby.

Here's what surprises me (as always)...that those who claim to have been following our story for more than a few minutes would doubt our ability and judgment in caring for ourselves and those we come into contact with. Expect the best of people.

    Thank you for your prayers.

    Nate

  42. Drive carefully and we'll be praying for all of you. Her first head cold at age 10 months attests to the excellent care and protection you give her. A little clogged/runny nose doesn't last long in little ones, just causes concern for Mom and Dad.

    Stay warm and happy.

    Love to all.
