No Fear
Gwyneth has no fear...we're also thinking that she has no nerve endings...it takes a lot of hurt to make this little girl cry. I guess that can be good and bad, but it sure does make the playground a lot of fun! She loves climbing to the highest slide by herself and going down head first, and you can never push her fast enough or high enough on the swings.

Love these!! Reminds me of our daughter whose first word, as I recall, was "HOWUH!", translated, of course, "HIGHER!" Enjoy your little high adventure girl...and hang on for the ride!

ReplyDeleteHave you ever talked to other parents of former micro preemies or otherwise medically fragile kids about her pain tolerance? Our little guy spent the first 4 months of his life in the hospital, and underwent nine surgeries in six sessions under general anesthesia, and he has a pretty high pain tolerance as well. We've actually worried, off and on, about how high it seems to be. I just wondered if there was something about the early exposure that affected that. . . .

ReplyDeleteI have heard that many preemies seem to just be built tougher. Don't know if any studies have been done or if there is anything medical to explain it.
Our first son, who was born many, many years ago and was a premmie, has always had a high pain threshold. My dad had a theory about that. He decided that David had experienced so many painful "sticks and pokes" immediately after birth (over several weeks) that he sort of got used to it. Don't know how valid that is, but it made sense to us.

She has proven over and over how tough she is - you gotta watch those ones who have no fear - you never want to squash that adventuresome nature, but you do need to protect. Have loads of fun! I know you don't take her for granted - thanks for sharing her with us!

ReplyDeleteHave you ever done a sensory integration survey with Gwyneth? Extremely high pain tolerance can be a sensory integration issue. Not necessarily significant, just something to know. I have one with sensory integration issues that require some therapy, and the survey is simple and easy to do. Ask her OT or PT about it!
ReplyDeletehiya my daughter Lolly is 7 now she was very premature. she also feels no pain. she is so hardy she has no fear at all. enjoy it . these kids are super special made of hard stuff !!!!x
ReplyDeleteShe's just tough because of how she started out in life - poked and prodded, stuck and taped for months. It's not that she doesn't feel pain, she just doesn't let it phase her.
ReplyDeleteYou wonder if deep inside she isn't aware that life isn't to be taken for granted and that she's not going to be afraid to take it on with zest.
She'll be the goal keeper on the soccer team, daring anyone to kick it by her and coming home with the badges of scrapes and bruises.
She'll be the one in gymnastics who volunteers first to try the flips and tumbles and balance beam.
She'll be the one who when everyone else says, "You can't" will respond, "Watch me."
I love the swing pictures with her hair! She is amazing!

ReplyDeleteI have a 5 yr. old grandson exactly like her. He had his first bike wreck at 3 and tore all the hide off of his forehead hitting the concrete. He had NO fear and would do a flip over the back of my couch, land on his head and jump up laughing. He doesn't do it now, because he does have one little fear--- time outs. LOL
ReplyDeleteCute little girl. I see sensory issues have been mentioned. We have a daughter with austism and she has a very high pain tolerance. She loves high and tight and is fearless. That also has a part of not recognizing danger or boundries.

If you haven't heard preemies have a very high pain tolerance. My little girl Andrea who just turned 5 was a 28 week preemie. She too has a dare devil streak and a very high pain tolerance. It must be from all of those pricks in the NICU!

ReplyDeleteGlad she loves it so much! My aunt and uncle found out that their daughter's vision was the reason she was fearless ... but obviously Gwyneth is having hers improved, so she must just really love it!! :)
