Bad Report

We were back at Duke yesterday, and the report was not good.  If the CAMPATH is working, her Pulmonary Function Tests should be showing improvement and her weight should be stabilized if not increasing.  But, her PFTs and weight have both dropped since our last visit a few weeks ago.  In addition, she has developed a sinus infection, which will be incredibly dangerous if it is not dealt with quickly.

Tricia needs things to turn around very soon and very quickly.

  32. Tricia, Gwyneth, you and your family are in our prayers. One of my favorite hymns which reminds me of God's faithfulness and the great comfort only He can bring:

    Abide with me; fast falls the eventide;
    The darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide;
    When other helpers fail and comforts flee,
    Help of the helpless, oh, abide with me.

    Swift to its close ebbs out life’s little day;
    Earth’s joys grow dim, its glories pass away;
    Change and decay in all around I see—
    O Thou who changest not, abide with me.

    I need Thy presence every passing hour;
    What but Thy grace can foil the tempter’s pow’r?
    Who, like Thyself, my guide and stay can be?
    Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me.

    I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless;
    Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness;
    Where is death’s sting? Where, grave, thy victory?
    I triumph still, if Thou abide with me.

    Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes;
    Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies;
    Heav’n’s morning breaks, and earth’s vain shadows flee;
    In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.

    Love in Christ,
    Nicole and Paul Kent

    Just an idea.

  60. Dear "Nurse of 23 Years",

  63. Hi, nurse of 23 years!

    I am also a nurse, even though not quite as long as you have been. But I am also a wife of a cf man. Maybe you need to go back to school and learn some empathy and tact. You have no idea what these patients feel like. I pray for God's conviction on you for such an unneccesary comment and mindfully pray for this couple that God heals and surrounds them with His love.

  65. I'm so glad I don't give "advice" or any of my "wisdom" as Nurse of 23 years did.....this nurse gave advice as an opinion, not as any justified or scientifically based suggestion. My love flows to Nate and Tricia for their way of embracing life, receiving support and unconditional love from family and the community of friends that are like family.
    They are living life. Sometimes that obviously means being IN the midst of life and those possibly carrying germs that aren't good for immune system (anyone's). But they take precaution, they live, they thrive, they share unconditional love for others and one another.

    Snide remarks "disguised" as "advice" have no place in a blog such as this. My prayers are with the "well-intentioned" to stop making it about them, about their comments, about their views. It is about God's presence in the daily lives and the miracles of healing of this precious family.

  69. I don't think nurse of 23 years is really who he/she says he/she is!

    ReplyDelete
  70. I think it's time for nurse of 23 years to retire. They have obviously begun to reach the recesses of senility and have lost any "bedside manner" or patient social skills.

    What an evil person to post this comment! You have NO idea what activities they are taking on... what precautions they take, and what risk her immune system was placed in. Her highly educated doctors would not venture an opinion like that and they acknowledge medicine is a practice.
    If you truly had the medical experience that you state, you would also know that you have to weigh the individual patient benefit. The mental state of mind of the patient is vital to recovery. Isolating Tricia would do nothing to serve her that way. She needs to be "living life." Why in the world would she otherwise be willing to undergo what she had to carry for the past 5 years?
    It's all about balance and you know it!
