Awake and Aware

Tricia is awake. When I talked with her the first time (she still has the trach and can't talk), I had to tell her where she was and why she was here. She does not remember much about yesterday, including getting the call, my birthday, going into the OR, etc. When I came back in the second time, she didn't remember me being there the first time.

She was very uncomfortable and restless a few hours ago, but with the help of a new fan and lots of pain meds, she seems to be calming down. She can't tell any different in her breathing, but that's simply because she cant really feel anything and is so drugged that she's having a hard time focusing.

She is breathing room air, with just a little help from the vent. They're taking a blood gas right now, and if it looks good, they'll put her on a trach collar trial, and then walk her within the next hour. Yes, I said WALK her!

I got an hour of sleep earlier, and will be sleeping at the hotel tonight as they won't allow me into the ICU past 9 tonight. I plan on posting some more then.

Thanks!

Nate

This is probably going to be the most painful walk of her life and for you too, I know when you see her hurt you hurt also. Stay strong for her. You guys will be walking on the sand on the beach in Nags Head in no time. God is good, all the time. Get some rest Nate.
Love to you all,
Teresa

Nate, you have all been through such a tremendous amount in such a short period of time. We know that prayers were answered and that miracles occured the past weeks and months. We hope that now - you can all focus on resting and breathing and trying to take care of yourselves to get you through the next hurdle that will come. Tricia is one amazing human being and I'm sure you don't need me to tell you that. However, your strength and support are awesome throughout this extremely difficult time. Hope that she rests well tonight and that you can have peace and calm knowing that half of the world it seems is praying on your behalf while you sleep. Tricia, Gywneth, yourself and your families and of course your donor family are all in our prayers every moment. Hang in there and we hold Tricia especially in hope, prayer and love,
Tricia and Clan (N.VA):)

Nate, I read your Dad's update. I cannot even put into words what I felt reading about Tricia walking and sitting with y'all. Sure can't imagine what it was like for you. Hope you are getting much needed rest. Prayers will continue for all of you. God Bless you all! Since I had a bad case of the transplant insomnia/"stalking" disease last night I am going to bed myself. I am so happy for you all, and will keep praying for the long road ahead. ((((((HUGS)))))) to you and the miracle mommy and miracle baby!!
God Bless

What a blessing!

I had my daughter @ her hospital for a checkup all day today, and this morning while in cardiology we checked your site on the TX nurse's notebook. They were very happy for you & Tricia & surprised about Gwyneth all at the same time!

GOD IS GREAT!!

Blessings,
Karen

I just spent the last hour scrolling through all your updates on your blog. I'm a peds resident up here in New York and while I have taken care of patients with CF and also cared for my fair share of kiddos that came out of the cooker too soon, I've never encountered something like this. I'm amazed and encouraged by what you and your family are going through. It gives me hope that all is not wrong in the world. Your daughter is thriving (Preemie Power!) and your wife is turning the corner onto the next road in her roadmap to recovery. My thoughts are with all of you tonight as I get ready to go and take care of my own sick kids - my patients in the hospital. Thank you so much for being brave and sharing your story and your lives with all of us.

I found your blog last night through an Australian online forum, and have spent hours and hours catching up to today.

Congratulations on Tricias new lungs. You are all very beautiful people. Thankyu for sharing your lives with us.

I have linked your blog from mine, so hopefully that will send some more people to you.

Praying for you guys! Found your blog through Kenzie Stanfield. We have some friends whose oldest son has CF - he had a lung transplant when he was about 8 years old...if I remember correctly!

Believing God with you!

It sounds like Tricia is doing as well as one could hope considering that she just came through MAJOR surgery! I was so thankful to read the posts today and will continue to keep you three in my prayers. Our Lord is faithful to provide for His children. :)

I am glad to hear that she is waking up. My daughter was born at 25 weeks and weighed 1 lb 3 oz last February. I actually found your blog from a friend of mine that has a blog and posted your story on hers (Kupiec.blogspot.com). We both met in NICU when our little ones were born. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
